How to Choose the Right Wedge Loft

How to Choose the Right Wedge Loft

Choosing the right wedge loft is one of the most impactful decisions you can make for your short game. Get it right and you'll have a seamless set of gapping from your irons all the way to the green. Get it wrong and you'll find yourself with awkward yardages and no reliable option to attack the pin.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know to build a wedge setup that works for your game.

Why Wedge Loft Matters

Wedge loft determines how high the ball flies and, crucially, how far it travels. Most golfers carry between two and four wedges, and the goal is to create consistent distance gaps — typically 10–15 yards — between each one. If your gaps are uneven, you'll constantly be caught between clubs.

Start With Your Pitching Wedge

Modern game-improvement irons often come with a strong pitching wedge loft of 43–46°. Tour-style irons tend to sit closer to 46–48°. Before you choose your wedges, check the loft of your pitching wedge — everything else builds from there.

The Most Common Wedge Setups

Here are the most popular configurations for different types of golfers:

  • Two-wedge setup: Gap Wedge (52°)+ sand wedge (56°). Simple, but leaves gaps for many players.
  • Three-wedge setup: Pitching wedge + gap wedge (50–52°) + sand wedge (56°). The most common setup for club golfers.
  • Four-wedge setup: Pitching wedge + gap wedge (50°) + sand wedge (54–56°) + lob wedge (58–60°). Preferred by better players who need maximum versatility around the green.

Matching Loft to Your Game

Your handicap and playing style should influence your loft choices:

  • Higher handicappers benefit from a 56° sand wedge with plenty of bounce — it's forgiving from bunkers and tight lies.
  • Mid-handicappers often do well with a 50°, 54°, and 58° setup, giving good gapping without too much complexity.
  • Lower handicappers may prefer a 48°, 52°, 56°, and 60° setup to maximise scoring options on approach shots and around the green.
